Size

16 500 m²

Client

Completion

2021

The new hospital in Meppel focuses on low-complexity, plannable, and chronic care, while complex care will remain at the Isala Hospital in Zwolle. Specialisations in trauma geriatrics, inguinal hernia and retinal operations are being transferred to Meppel from the facility in Zwolle. Paediatrics and acute obstetrics have moved permanently to Zwolle, but Meppel will retain 24-hour emergency care and a scaled-down intensive care unit. The new facility will replace the current Diaconessenhuis, reducing its size from 40,000 to 16,500 sqm, with 100 of the original 120 beds remaining.

Deerns Solutions

The new hospital is a sustainable, future-oriented building designed to integrate with the nearby Het Reestdal nature reserve, reflecting the character of the historic Reest village. The building has dedicated areas for operations, nursing, and a health facility attached to the hospital. External care providers have also been accommodated. During construction, the existing hospital remained operational. Sustainable practices guided all aspects, from materials and energy use to management and maintenance.
