The Matrix Innovation Center, designed for Life Science companies, is a flexible shell-and-core building with standard laboratory facilities and future adaptability. Deerns handled the mechanical, electrical and transport designs, as well as building physics, fire safety, smart and sustainability advice. This design emphasises flexibility between offices and labs while providing a well-lit, inspiring workspace.

Flexible planning for the Future
The Matrix Innovation Center, designed for Life Science companies, is a flexible shell-and-core building with standard laboratory facilities and future adaptability. This design suits companies needing accommodation for a fixed period, so design in the technical infrastructure enable future adjustments.
Deerns Solutions
To deliver flexibility between offices and laboratories, up to an ML-II classification, a combined central ventilation system serves all functional spaces with an all-air principle featuring cold air supply for cooling/ventilation, as well as an additional climate ceiling for individual room climate control. A smart system design enables data collection and light and climate control.
Sustainability
Matrix One is designed to achieve the BREEAM Excellent certificate and thus includes a connection to a Heat-Cold Storage system. Several energy and water-saving techniques ensure efficiencies, while energy flows and separate submetering enable control of energy and other resource usage. The installation of PV panels led to a remarkable reduction of the Energy Performance Coefficient value: of 0.15, which is 85% lower than the required value.
The overall result is that Matrix One exceeds the original design and sustainability ambitions.
