The Hague, 16 June 2026 — Following a European tender process, Deerns has been selected as the framework contractor for building services consultancy at MUMC+ in Maastricht. Here, we are working to create a sustainable, safe and future-proof healthcare environment.
The appointment continues a four-year partnership with Maastricht University Medical Centre+ (MUMC+) and confirms Deerns’ position as a high-quality engineering partner for complex healthcare facilities. Deerns is responsible for the complete building services design, including lighting design, safety & security, SMART buildings & building automation, sustainability & energy transition, vertical transport & mobility within buildings, and ICT infrastructures.
The framework contract forms part of a long-term transformation programme. The buildings on the MUMC+ campus date from the 1990s. Over the past three decades, requirements on buildings and technical systems have changed. This calls for renovation. The hospital has drawn up a comprehensive Strategic Property Plan 2020–2040 with a phased investment programme spanning over twenty years. As MUMC+ will remain fully operational during the transformation, the renovation work will take place step-by-step, project-by-project. Deerns brings experience from similar projects in the Dutch healthcare sector to this endeavour.to this endeavour.
" Clients in the healthcare sector face similar challenges, such as addressing staff shortages, creating a ‘healing environment’ and making existing buildings more sustainable. Our experience from Radboudumc and other healthcare institutions will support our work at MUMC+.
Expansion of the imaging department
Under the previous framework contract, Deerns was commissioned to design the new imaging department. Having been spread throughout the hospital, MRI, CT and other imaging technology will be brought together in a single location that is close to the A&E department and the existing imaging facilities. This will shorten walking or transportation distances for patients and speed up collaboration between departments.
The imaging department has specific requirements regarding spatial conditions, radiation protection, cooling and electrical engineering. Everything is connected. Cooling, electrical systems, building physics and safety all influence one another so have been designed as an integrated whole.
Local proximity, national healthcare expertise
Short lines of communication between Deerns and the client, combined with our local presence and expertise, enable rapid response – a major advantage for a hospital that will remain fully operational during the refurbishment work.
Deerns combines our local presence with a national network in the healthcare sector. Issues relating to accommodation and technology at Radboudumc or other university medical centres provide directly applicable insights for MUMC+. Technologies that have already been tried and tested elsewhere do not need to be reinvented in Maastricht.
Sustainable care as a shared ambition
" MUMC+ has signed the Green Deal for Healthcare 3.0, thereby setting out concrete sustainability targets.
Deerns will advise on the transformation regarding the energy component and the carbon footprint of buildings and installations. With every refurbishment on campus, the same question is asked: which materials should be chosen, and how will the energy infrastructure be designed for the coming decades?
Deerns is also exploring how smart building technology can ease the burden on healthcare staff. From building automation that streamlines processes to sensor systems that help staff make the right decisions more quickly.
Towards the healthcare environment of tomorrow
The design process for the imaging department is expected to start in the autumn of 2026. The ambition is clear. With this framework contract, Deerns is continuing its long-term collaboration and further developing a hospital environment that is ready for the coming decades.
