Designed for Precision, Flexibility and Advanced Semiconductor Research

A new Nanolab, built for the MESA+ Research Institute at University of Twente, supports world-class semiconductor research by the TNW and EWI groups in Enschede, Netherlands. Due to the rapidly changing nature of research, high demands were placed on the adaptability of the new research environment for future equipment.

The design of the building was characterised by its many different technical facilities. For example, the process equipment required a total of more than 30 different types of gas, various waters and dedicated climate control. In addition to the logistical and functional needs of the process equipment, dust and vibration control as well as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements were decisive aspects in the design of the Nanolab.

Deerns Solutions

Deerns completed the feasibility study, design and tendering support and overall construction supervision. The role of Deerns encompassed overall project coordination including cost development and monitoring; design of the building mass; developing a laboratory and cleanroom concept; design of mechanical, electrical, process and transport building installations; all process-related spaces, technical areas and related spaces. For all these components, Deerns was involved from project definition up to and including aftercare.
