Bravis celebrates final design of smart hospital

The Hague, 17 February 2025. The completion of the final design for the New Bravis Hospital in Roosendaal, The Netherlands is all about providing smart, future-proof care for West Brabant.

Outdated buildings, a growing demand for care, more stringent sustainability requirements and an ageing population present major challenges for the healthcare sector. In order to respond to these developments and be ready for the future, Bravis decided to build a completely new modern hospital in 2019. This new hospital fits in seamlessly with the future-oriented vision of ‘The new Bravis’ and contributes to the Bravis foundation: Quality and safety, financial health, education and research, sustainability, learning and improvement.

With a surface area of approximately 77,500 m², the hospital will have 12 operating theatres, 2 outpatient operating theatres and 470 beds. After a careful selection procedure, Bravis Hospital chose Deerns, the architectural partnership Team aan de Schie (Vakwerk Architecten and cepezed), the landscape architects BoschSlabbers and the structural engineers ABT.

Anwar Hassan, Project Director at Deerns: “We are proud to contribute to the Nieuwe Bravis, which, through the merging of two locations, will become one of the larger non-academic hospitals in the Netherlands.”

Surgeon Denis Susa is closely involved in the design phase and is part of Bravis’s Core Construction Team. ‘Our new hospital is ready in terms of installations to offer high-tech care with modern operating theatres and diagnostic departments. This building makes maximum use of smart systems and technologies, increasing the comfort of patients and staff and enabling us to offer care in accordance with the latest technology.’

In 2023 and 2024, all parties worked intensively together on the final design, which has now been completed. We received valuable input from more than 200 medical specialists, nurses, clinical physicists and other Bravis employees who were closely involved in tailoring the design to the healthcare needs of the future. We are currently developing the technical design, which is scheduled for completion in mid-May 2025.

In addition to the installations for the hospital, Deerns has also been given a separate assignment for building physics, acoustics and fire safety. This means we will also ensure optimal daylight entry in line with the lighting design, acoustic insulation and indoor air quality, and of course fire safety will also be guaranteed.

Sustainability and smart solutions for ‘The new Bravis’

Deerns’ expertise in healthcare is fully reflected in this project. The new hospital will be use fossil-free energy, in line with the New Green Deal 3.0, expecting to achieve an 85% CO₂ reduction by 2030, well above the standard of 55%.

The cornerstone of Bravis being a smart hospital is the Building Operating System (BOS), for example, using a smart and flexible outpatient clinic concept to ensure efficient use of space, visitors will be able to easily navigate to a consultation room using their phone. A track & trace system enables direct location of medical devices. It is also possible to monitor the occupancy rate and use of rooms and to plan cleaning and maintenance efficiently.

A future-proof healthcare environment

With this project, Bravis is laying the foundation for a future-proof healthcare environment and setting a new standard in sustainable hospital construction. Smart technology plays a crucial role in this, essential for the design of efficient, future-proof hospitals. With proven expertise in sustainable, smart solutions, Deerns contributes to a hospital that is ready for the future. The New Bravis will be a Smart Hospital that is prepared for the technology of tomorrow.
