The Hague, 19 November 2024 – Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht, engages Deerns for the design of a large-scale new-build project to contribute to the Greendeal 3.0. through more sustainable and efficient healthcare processes.
The healthcare sector faces a daunting task: to take care of an increasing amount of elderly people need intensive care with a dwindling number of care workers. The Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht is also experiencing this pressure, as a result of an ageing population. Consequently, radically reviewed care processe are part of the design concept for the new construction project. The new 16,500 m² hospital building will be completed by the end of 2028.
Peter Bouma, Unit Director Health Care, explains his approach to creating a future-proof energy vision: ‘If we look 5 to 10 years into the future, what would the energy infrastructure look like? How would we ensure that both the new and existing buildings continue to function as a safe place for recovery?’
Innovative design for a sustainable and future-proof care environment
Contracted for the technical design of a new building for the Diakonessenhuis, Deerns is part of a design team, including architectural firm Wiegerinck, developing a phased building plan that guarantees care continuity. Attention is also being paid to building physics, fire safety and acoustics, to create a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff. to create a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.
Deerns is currently working on the preliminary design and energy engineering master plan, in which we are zooming out to develop a future-oriented vision.
Where care worker and patient feel at home
Well being and comfort for both patients and carers is paramount in the design of the build. Wherever possible, the hospital aims to use innovation and technology to relieve care workers of mundane and repetitive work and giving more autonomy to patients.
" Stress-reducing elements, such as appropriate colours, light and temperature also create a comfortable recovery environment.
A smart and sustainable care environment where well-being is key
Thanks to energy-efficient solutions, such as solar energy and thermal storage, the hospital saves on energy and reduces CO₂ emissions. In this way, Deerns creates a future-proof and hospital that offers a pleasant, efficient working environment for staff and a comfortable recovery environment for patients.
