Modernising lighting at Westraven in Utrecht

The Hague, 9 December 2024 – Deerns modernises Westraven building with smart LED lighting and updated technology, for higher energy efficiency and future-proof building management.

Rijkswaterstaat awarded Deerns the contract to modernise both the lighting and control technology of the iconic Westraven building in Utrecht. The transition to energy-efficient LED lighting not only reduces energy consumption, but also extends the lifespan of the installations and ensures lower maintenance costs. Customised lighting is also an important element in this project, due to the various ceiling types in the building.

Improving well-being and lighting quality

Ralph van den Berg, Lighting Design team leader at Deerns, says: ‘The lighting installed now will last for at least another 25 years, so we have to ensure it is top quality.’ The building will remain largely operational during the replacement of the light controls and lighting which will bring additional challenges.

The upgraded installations offer more control over lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation, increasing user comfort. In addition, sensor-controlled systems provide efficient and smart control that will make the building sustainable and future-proof.

Lighting transition of iconic building

The iconic Westraven building in Utrecht, an 85-metre-high 23-storey office tower, was designed by Lucas & Niemeijer in 1976 and has since served as a key workplace for some 1,500 Rijkswaterstaat employees. The Westraven project is currently in the design phase. The tender for equipment installation can will start in quarter 1 of 2025. Deerns is working closely with Rijkswaterstaat and the draft design is expected to be ready by the end of 2024.
