Construction starts on Aspen Medical Hospital Depok

The new Aspen Medical Hospital is Indonesia’s first new-build green international hospital.

The start of construction for Aspen Medical Hospital in Depok, Indonesia, is more than just the beginning of a new building; it signals a transformative step forward in healthcare for the region. Emerald Hospital Design, a joint venture between Deerns, TeamworX, and Dutch Health Architects is spearheading this project. The project, which is targeting a Platinum certification from the Green Building Council Indonesia, is the first facility in a 20-hospital network that aims to set a new standard in accessible, sustainable, and future-ready healthcare in Indonesia.

A Landmark Project in Indonesian Healthcare

The goal of this project is clear: to meet Indonesia’s growing healthcare needs with state-of-the-art hospitals that prioritise patient care, staff wellbeing, and environmental sustainability. With its compact 24,000 square metre structure, Aspen Medical Hospital is designed to provide patients with high quality of care. This commitment to accessibility reflects the hospital’s mission to serve both private and universal health insurance patients.

Here’s where we engineer Innovation for a Sustainable Future

With the sustainability measures that are being implemented, the project has been able to ramp up its ambitions from targeting a Gold to a Platinum certification, making it Indonesia’s first new-build green hospital. Deerns played a pivotal role in designing the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, integrating sustainable building practices, and ensuring compliance with Indonesia’s building codes and regulations.

Some of the unique sustainability features include:

  • Open spaces with natural ventilation to reduce cooling requirements
  • Advanced air-handling systems that recycle exhaust air for humidity control
  • Energy-efficient lighting systems that automatically adjust based on occupancy

These innovative features illustrate how Deerns has adapted Dutch sustainable engineering practices to meet Indonesia’s specific environmental and regulatory conditions. The hospital design also allows for future modifications, ensuring that the infrastructure can evolve with technological advancements and changing healthcare demands.

Construction Updates and Project Milestones

Construction recently progressed with the completion of the piling, forming a strong foundation for the earthquake-resistant structure essential in Indonesia’s seismic zone. Moving from the design phase to active construction marks an exciting and crucial milestone as the project advances toward its goal of opening within the next two years.

Aspen Medical Hospital will stand as a flexible, futureproof facility built to accommodate potential expansions and shifts in room functionality. This adaptability is crucial for an evolving healthcare environment, especially given the limited land available in densely populated areas like Depok.

Skills Transfer and Local Empowerment

One of the project’s critical goals is to foster knowledge sharing between Deerns and local engineers. Working alongside TeamworX and Dutch Health Architects, Deerns has provided hands-on training and guidance to local partners, ensuring that each new hospital in the Aspen Medical Hospital network benefits from increased local expertise. The joint venture with local architects and engineers will empower Indonesia’s workforce, improving efficiency and encouraging innovation in future hospital projects.

Looking ahead, Deerns anticipates even greater efficiency in future builds within this 20-hospital initiative. Each new project will leverage the lessons learned and technical skills developed through the Aspen Medical Hospital experience, ultimately creating a sustainable and replicable model for healthcare facilities across Indonesia.

Towards a Sustainable, Inclusive Future

Aspen Medical Hospital in Depok is more than a construction project; it is a commitment to advancing Indonesia’s healthcare system. This hospital embodies the client’s vision to create a supportive environment for medical professionals, foster trust with patients, and provide care to all, regardless of income level.

The Aspen Medical Hospital is expected to inspire further advancements and investments in Indonesia’s healthcare landscape, setting a high standard for future hospital projects. Through this ambitious initiative, Emerald Hospital Design and Aspen Medical Hospitals are proving that modern healthcare facilities can be both environmentally responsible and socially equitable.
