7 November 2024 – Deerns were shortlisted in ‘Project of the Year – New Build International’ category at the Façade 2024 Design and Engineering Awards in London.
Deerns was recognised in the highly competitive category for its work on the façade of Luxottica’s new headquarters. The event was held on 6 November at Old Billingsgate, London.
Completing Luxottica’s headquarters campus
Described as a hidden icon in the heart of Milan, the building features a highly specialised glazed façade, conceived by architectural firm Park Associati as a transparent crystal.
Deerns skilfully balanced the architectural vision of a fully transparent envelope with the highest requirements in terms of energy performance and the thermal and solar comfort of the interior spaces. Deerns was responsible for the façade engineering and consultancy throughout the project.
Giuseppe Dibari, Managing Director at Deerns Italy said: “The clean-cut forms, cutting-edge technology and high-quality materials used in the final building in Luxottica’s headquarters epitomise innovation, beauty and functionality. A fitting reflection of the iconic eyewear brands of the Luxottica Group.
“We are very proud of our work on the project and delighted to be shortlisted for the Best Project New Build International award for the façade.”
Balancing performance with aesthetics
Alongside the striking visual effect, the glazed façade was also integral to the building’s energy performance. The ambition to maximise light and transparency was coupled with a need to reduce solar heat gain. Close collaboration between the architect, Deerns’ façade engineers, MEP specialists and structural engineers resulted in an innovative double skin system design for the main elevation.
The cavity between the façade layers provides additional thermal insulation. A stack effect delivers natural ventilation, reduces solar heat gain and helps to maintain temperature stability.
The glazing was carefully chosen to minimise visual distortion and deliver a fully transparent façade. This enhances user wellbeing by allowing plentiful daylight to enter the space and giving those inside the building clear sightlines to the outdoors.
Material selection was governed by strict sustainability guidelines. The design also addressed the requirements for safe access for cleaning and for more technical needs such as reglazing.
Deerns at the Façade Awards
This latest shortlist follows last year’s success as the team was recognised with the Project of the Year – Refurbishment International category for their work on the Luxottica Digital Factory.
Nicola Greco, Operations Director, Facades says: “Competing so closely for another Façade Award, for a different building in a different category shows the level of expertise and commitment within Deerns’ design team and our continued commitment to innovation, collaboration and excellence.”
