Máxima MC and Deerns start long-term partnership

The Hague, 8 April 2025 – The Máxima Medical Centre (MMC) hospital is preparing for the healthcare demands and challenges of the future. Deerns has been selected as installation consultant for new build and renovation on the MMC site.

Deerns has secured a contract with Máxima Medical Centre (MMC) which marks the beginning of a partnership that will last until around 2035, to be future-ready predicted healthcare demand in the coming decades. Deerns is responsible for all technology that will be optimally integrated in the hospital, where energy efficiency is of paramount importance. This extensive project is being carried out in cooperation with the following partners: EGM Architects, Consultancy firm Tielemans and Peutz. Máxima MC is a top clinical hospital with two locations in the Netherlands: one in the centre of Eindhoven and the other the border of Veldhoven. Medical staff dedicate themselves daily to high-quality care in the region. Patients and their families play an important role in this.

The renovation of the Veldhoven site, which dates from 1989, is a large-scale project with several integral components:

  • New building: approximately 43,000 m²
  • Renovation: About 11,000 m²
  • Demolition: About 33,000 m²
  • Conservation of existing building: About 41,000 m²
  • Replacement or maintenance of central electrical and mechanical power generation and infrastructure

Creating a hospitable care environment

Deerns is responsible for designing, planning and supervising the new energy infrastructure. It is also developing an ambitious master plan for the next 10 to 12 years, aimed at the optimal renewal and expansion of the hospital. Having met its 2030 energy targets, Máxima MC intends to pull forward its targets from 2050 for 2035.

Meanwhile, Deerns has already started work on the design of the new entrance. Reinier Spies, Senior Project Manager at Deerns says, “Patients and families are effortlessly guided through the hospital from the first moment of entering the spacious and welcoming reception hall. The renovated entrance will feature a restaurant and auditorium. The open design fits seamlessly with Máxima MC’s vision, in which hospitality towards patients their loved ones is central.”

Safeguarding essential functions is key. Construction work and infrastructure will be carefully planned so as not to disrupt daily operations and healthcare. By demolishing parts of the hospital while other buildings remain operational, inconvenience to patients and staff is kept to a minimum.

A gas-free and energy-efficient hospital

The Máxima MC is known for its excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and aims to be fully certified with the local healthcare sustainability ranking in the Netherlands – the Healthcare Sustainability Thermometer – Silver (MPZ).

Sustainability is central to this project and will be achieved, among other things, by providing gas-free heating and cooling solutions, renewing the energy infrastructure, applying smart building technology and researching and implementing sustainable climate concepts.

Deerns will contribute to this through design which aims at lower CO2 emissions, less environmental impact and lower operational costs. Here’s where Máxima Medical Centre becomes future ready!
