In 2006 the Government of Gibraltar started a design and build project to replace the existing passenger and cargo terminals at Gibraltar International Airport in compliance with the Cordoba Agreement.
This leads to the most unique aspect of this project; the airport offers passengers, from Gibraltar and Spain, direct admittance to the airport, effectively having a single terminal that handles domestic traffic within the UK and Spain (effectively the whole Schengen area) in parallel. Accommodating this within the baggage handling systems and building security systems was one of the main challenges of the project. Deerns designed all terminal ICT systems, baggage handling systems and airside special systems. Deerns also supervised the commissioning of these systems.
