Brazil is in full preparation for the 2016 summer Olympics. To this end Viracopos airport located 100km out of Sao Paolo will be expanded and developed to a major hub airport for the city.
The airport is currently predominantly used as a cargo airport with not many passenger flights. In the coming thirty years however the airport is expected to develop into a major hub, with up to 65 million passengers annually. Deerns, in collaboration with NACO, has prepared the airport utility master plan, while simultaneously preparing design documents for the first phase of expansion to be completed by 2014.
